Painting and review are copyrighted work by Ginda Simpson Hotel Victoria is situated within the Roman gate, Porta Borsari, on a block, or insula, of the old Roman street grid of Verona. The 1970’s renovation of this structure, that was once a residential complex distributed over three levels, revealed important archeological remains of its Roman past. What had been destroyed during WWII was remodelled by renowned Veronese architect Cecchini, whose design was carried out in modern reinforced concrete. His careful attention to incorporating remnants of the building’s medieval past and preserving at the same time its Roman origins makes the Victoria an attractive and unique hotel. A partial glass flooring in the hotel’s breakfast room gives guests a glimpse of the excavated ruins of a “domus,” or private dwelling of ancient Roman origin.
History is not the only unique feature of Hotel Victoria. Its hospitality is first class. We had a perfect view of the Borsari Gate and its charming piazza from a room that offered quiet luxury and unexpected amenities. A friendly and attentive staff saw to our needs, and the buffet breakfast was an absolute feast.
Within walking distance of the Arena and all the important sights of this charming city, Hotel Victoria is the ideal place to stay in Verona at any time, but especially during Opera season.
